Hood River Hotel hosts cool production space for Gorgelato

Sonya Wickham Jackson pours pistachio gelato mix into the chiller in a corner of the Hood River Hotel’s kitchen.

Sonya Wickham Jackson had pretty much done it all, until she embarked on her newest gig — making gelato in a corner of the Hood River Hotel’s kitchen.

The native New Zealander had worked in print advertising, on film crews, and as a bartender all over Australia before her life changed in a big way. She was on a whitewater rafting trip near Rotorua, on the north island of New Zealand, when she met this really handsome rafting guide, Dave Jackson.

Her husband, Dave Jackson. And now her business partner in Gorgelato, dished up from a shaded stand near the Doppio Coffee + Lounge in downtown Hood River.

Sonya Wickham Jackson and her husband, David Jackson, display the finished product of their new business — chilled pistachio gelato.

Sonya, in fact, bought the gelato cart from Doppio, where she had worked in the summer of 2011. It was her way to take a claim on permanence in the Gorge.

She and David had traveled quite a bit after their stars aligned. They lived and worked briefly in Colorado, Pennsylvania, West Virginia (David’s home turf), South America and New Zealand. From that idyllic land, they dreamed of the American west, and a town that had the mix of recreational activities they loved — hiking, whitewater kayaking (Dave is pretty extremely into this), skiing, biking, even things they don’t even do, such as windsurfing and kiteboarding.

Hood River, anyone?

They arrived in the Hood in May of 2011.

“It’s awesome,” Sonya says. “But I’d like more time to enjoy the activities we’re here for.”

Free coffee reminds us of Hood River’s real (and better) social networks

Yes, when you work in downtown Hood River, there is sometimes a free cup of coffee.

Do you ever think about ditching the city life, for something a bit more … like Hood River? Smaller? More intimate? More amazing, in unexpected ways?

Do it. This is why.

On a weekday morning, sitting at your desk at the Hood River Hotel (for example), you hear your boss say, “Want a free cup of coffee?”

Even though you’re already jacked up on jolt from the free coffee that your employer provides, you’re a bit of a bargain hog, so you say, “Sure.”

“Well, get across the street, because Brian is training people at Hood River Bagel and they’re going to throw away the lattes if somebody doesn’t drink them.”

So, you wander across the street, coffee cup in hand (you want it “to go”). Inside, you meet Tim, a buddy of Brian Graves, the owner of Pacific Rim Coffee Roasters. As it happens, Pacific Rim supplies the Hood River Hotel, source of your first jolt of the day, as well as Doppio Coffee + Lounge, another source of lovely cups.

Tim looks familiar. Yes, he was the customer on Saturday night, with his brother, at the restaurant you own and work at in your “spare” time. But he tells you he is really a barista at Doppio, and today is helping the bagel shop’s owner, Autumn Woods, and her staff learn how to make killer lattes.

Tim takes the crew through a demo, and hands the results to you, and you wander back across the street to your desk, thinking, “I love this town.”

In 10 minutes, you have connected with two friends, who know two other friends, all together representing four different businesses, and, in the process, scored a free cup of very fine coffee.

Yes! Just another daily reminder of why we live here. Until you do, come on out and visit us.
