Gorge wineries roll out the bottle on Memorial Day Weekend

8 May

Beer isn’t the only fermented product in the Hood River area. We’ve got wine, too. Boy, do we have wine.

Columbia Gorge wineries roll out the bottle on Memorial Day weekend May 26-28. More than 30 wineries host open houses featuring special releases, great discounts, food and more.

Winery members of the Columbia Gorge Wine Growers Association dot the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area along  40 miles of the great river, on both the Washington and Oregon sides. Visiting on-site tasting rooms gives a great excuse to take in mountain views of Mt. Adams and Mt. Hood, stop for a hike, grab some photos, explore local art galleries, drop in for a bite to eat at one of the Gorge’s great restaurants.

To aid your touring and determine tasting room hours, visit the association web site and get a downloadable map. You also can get a map at any participating winery.

Wine sippers get another downtown Hood River destinaton

Things were quiet the other morning when we passed by the subterranean tasting room of our newest tasty neighbor — the Stella Fino winery tasting room, at 2nd and Oak below Shortt Supply. It’s got limited weekend hours, so check the web site before visiting.

Downtown Hood River now has eight tasting rooms (woo-hoo!) and is the hub on a wheel that spins many more in our orbit — a great reason to visit and explore all the varietals and blends emerging from the greatest ground on Earth.

To aid your planning, definitely check out our friends at the Columbia Gorge Wine Growers Association web site. They’ve got a full lineup of Thanksgiving holiday weekend open house events, following on the heels of their currently busy time of harvest and crush. If you visit now, you might see winemaking in action — or even get enlisted to help out (if you want, that is).
